It's not really a touch screen. Just a touch pad. Why is it there? You won't know till you see some games using it.
I guess you could use it for some quick browsing. The reason they put it on the back is because you have your supporting fingers there while playing, You may as well make use of it. Another reason is they want you to have a touchpad but don't want to reduce screen size. It's a funny innovation. I'm looking forward to seeing how developers will make use of it.
