Is The Ps3 40 gb Ever Going To Have Backwards Compatibility Via Firmware Update? Will it?
-pleupold7
i don't think a firmware update has the capacity to alter the compatibility.

It is very unlikely.
To achieve PS2 compatibility support for the PS2 graphics synthesizer and CPU need to be provided. In the US 20 & 60 GB PS3's this was achieved in hardware, the European versions and the new 80GB version have software emulation to replace the CPU, but retained hardware for graphics support.
The graphics hardware has been removed in the 40GB version.
If it was realistic to emulate the synthesizer in software Sony would probably have done it.

probably not but we can all hope right?

I seriously doubt it because if it were possible, the 40GB PS3 would already have backwards compatibility with PS2 games.
If there is ever an update that will allow the 40GB PS3 to play PS2 games, you will probably have to pay for the update like the updates for the Iphone and Ipod Touch because it is a very special type of update. However, Sony is known for keeping almost everything free, so there is no telling if it will ever happen, but I don't think it will.
If you wanted to play both PS1 and PS2 games, you needed to spend $ 100 more dollars to get the 80GB PS3, it's just that simple.

I'd say so, considering that Europe and Australia only have access to the 40gb models. But maybe when PS2 games start appearing on the PSN store the 40gb models may be able to play them.
Heres a news article regarding it.
