I recommend you leave the PS3 OS on the PS3, if you have enough money buy a laptop hard drive and format it, insert it into the PS3 and install Ubuntu on it.
Its not dangerous but it could become a BIG hassle in the future...

You make it sound like the PS3 OS gets deleted when you install Linux; I assure you this is not the case. Its just another OS to use on your PS3 (for PC-type applications); there will be two of them on the hard drive instead of one. You'll have to hold the power button on the console to switch back to the PS3 OS; you won't be able to run them both simultaneously.
