Do I need to update my PS3's firmware even if I'm not that interested to play games online?I'm planning to buy a ps3 next week, the 250gb slim model. The problem is, I heard that some of the latest firmware updates cause a lot of problems(like the blu-ray drive not working or frequent freezes etc.). I'm not really interested on online multiplayer or the trophies. I simply just want to play games like mgs4 since i like the mgs series. So I'm just asking if updating it is really needed to play games or if I can just ignore it completely since I don't really play online since my internet connection is pretty slow. I'm just scared because if I try to update it might break my system rendering it unusable.

Don't believe that "firmware update causing problems" horseshit. People say that sh*t after every firmware update and the reported instances are extremely insignificant (as in less than 0.5%). I have never experienced a firmware update problem in 2 1/2 years of ownership.

You are not required to update, but many of the newer PS3 games will not run if you don't have the latest firmware update. Because of this, they will put the latest firmware update on the disc. So, if you plan on playing any relatively new PS3 games YOU WILL HAVE TO UPDATE whether you want to or not.

Some games need the update and contain it within the disk prompting you yo install this first. Online makes no difference. I've had no problem with the update however so maybe its now resolved
